Scientist Arete stops fiddling with the strange device he is holding: its a red disk about a foot across, with flashing lights along it. The edge of the disk seems blurry, as if it was cutting through the air very fast.
"Player, do you know what this is? Its a Faranji particle sleigh, it appears that it uses chronotronic radiation to warp the space / time field around it to increase the speed with which it travels through space. I think they used it for transport, or possibly a child's toy".
He throws it into a pile of strange junk: "Anyhow, Player, it would appear that sometimes augmenters get bombarded by chronotronic radiation, and gain some small measure of space / time particle sleeting added to them. I really need to study this, it could lead to a huge breakthrough in augmenter design!".
He jumps up in excitement, moving over to a contraption seemingly cobbled together from stray pieces of titanium sheeting and with an old Faranji ship generator attatched via fraying conduits. A large box, perhaps a metre across, the centre is a crackling blue field of electricity and other, more exotic, particles.
"If you could bring me an entire set of the minor augs, I could start analyzing the effects of this radiation". He gestures proudly to the box. "I'm hoping that the nature of the augmenters will let me handle minute amounts of the radiation... otherwise, we'll have a small black hole where this station is!".
As you turn to leave, Scientist Arete grabs you by the arm. "Player! There's one more thing I should mention: I believe that the augmenter created will be awash with the radiation, and will tune into your unique waveform. This means that only you will be able to use this augmenter!!".
He looks thoughtful. "It also means that you might be affected by the radiation, but that's a small price to pay for being at the forefront of a scientific breakthrough!" He grins at you with a rather alarming look in his eye... nervous yet?
